Like many Marxists books, I felt A jacovins view of the fight against imperialism and slavery. But such revolutionary declarations had nonetheless thrown the minority free population of Saint Domingue into turmoil and civil war in the name of liberty.

Toussaint, however, disoriented his generals by opening negotiations for some kind of settlement with France that would maintain the Black generals in their offices. James spends some time explaining the strengths and weaknesses, the many successes, jacbins the few but critical failures of this incredible former slave. Toussaint was a brilliant general, to be sure, but he wanted to be a brilliant diplomat as well. It was gravely inaccurate in fact, but they had caught the spirit of the thing.
Finally, Dessalines and other Black generals joined the rebellion, breaking forever with France, and gave the Black masses disciplined military leadership.
