Deogratias, the main character, was often deograyias even in the book’s pre-genocide events, before he was severely damaged cognitively. Deogratias pines after her though she denies him.
I also had read books on the Rwandan genocide and thought optimistically that it might be read by a YA audience in schools. The language and at times the content is much more tal than I’m going to have to read this a few more times before I’ll be able to talk intelligently about Deogratias.
I would not recommend this narrative for any younger than advanced level high school classes. I read this graphic novel in the hopes that it would be a good piece to add to my classroom’s library.
The story swings back and forth between the time before and after the genocide, and readers watch as a young boy concerned only about girls transforms into a young man tortured by his memories. I like knowing the history and stories about Rwanda. Difficult, beautiful, honest, and heartbreaking, this is a major work by a masterful artist.
